THE CASE FOR A MISALIGNED RELATIVISTIC JET FROM SN 2001em
نویسندگان
چکیده
SN 2001em, identified as a Type Ic supernova, has recently been detected in the radio and X-rays, & 2 yr after the explosion. The high luminosities at such late times might arise from a relativistic jet viewed substantially off-axis that becomes visible only when it turns mildly relativistic and its emission is no longer strongly beamed away from us. Alternatively, the emission might originate from the interaction of the SN shell with the circumstellar medium. We find that the latter scenario is hard to reconcile with the observed rapid rise in the radio flux and optically thin spectrum, Fν ∝ νt, while these features arise naturally from a misaligned relativistic jet. The high X-ray luminosity provides an independent and more robust constraint – it requires ∼ 10 erg in mildly relativistic ejecta. The source should therefore currently have a large angular size (∼ 2 mas) which could be resolved in the radio with VLBA. It is also expected to be bipolar and is thus likely to exhibit a large degree of linear polarization (∼ 10%− 20%). The presence of a relativistic outflow in SN 2001em would have interesting implications. It would suggest that several percent of SNe Ib/c produce mildly relativistic jets, with an initial Lorentz factor Γ0 & 2, while the fraction that produce GRB jets (with Γ0 & 100) is ∼ 100 times smaller. This could considerably increase the expected number of transients similar to orphan GRB afterglows in the radio, and to a lesser extent in the optical and X-rays, if there is a continuous distribution in Γ0. Furthermore, this may give further credence to the idea that core collapse SNe, and in particular SNe Type Ib/c, are triggered by bipolar jets. SN 2001em: NO JET-DRIVEN GAMMA RAY BURST EVENT
We report on our second-epoch VLBI and VLA observations of the Type Ib/c supernova 2001em, five years after the explosion. It was suggested that SN 2001em might be a jet-driven gamma ray burst (GRB), with the jet oriented near the plane of the sky, which would entail relativistic expansion or motion. Our VLBI image shows that SN 2001em is still unresolved five years after the explosion. For a d...
متن کاملAn Upper Limit on the Expansion Velocity of Grb Candidate Sn 2001
We report on VLBI observations of the Type I b/c supernova 2001em, three years after the explosion. It had been suggested that SN 2001em might be a jet-driven gamma ray burst (GRB), with the jet oriented far from the line of sight so that the GRB would not be visible from earth. To test this conjecture, we determined the size of SN 2001em. It is only marginally resolved at our resolution of ∼0....
متن کاملLATE EMISSION FROM THE TYPE Ib/c SN 2001em: OVERTAKING THE HYDROGEN ENVELOPE
The Type Ib/c supernova SN 2001em was observed to have strong radio, X-ray, and Hα emission at an age of ∼ 2.5 yr. Although the radio and Xray emission have been attributed to an off-axis gamma-ray burst, we model the emission as the interaction of normal SN Ib/c ejecta with a dense, massive (∼ 3 M⊙) circumstellar shell at a distance ∼ 7 × 10 16 cm. We investigate two models, in which the circu...
متن کاملGamma-ray and neutrino emission from misaligned microquasars
Microquasars are accreting X-ray binary systems with non-thermal radio jets. In some of these systems the jet is expected to be strongly misaligned with the perpendicular to the orbital plane. If the donor star is an early-type star, the jet could collide with the stellar wind producing a standing shock between the compact object and the stellar surface. Relativistic particles injected by the j...
متن کاملLarge scale jets in AGN: multiwavelength mapping
X–ray emission from large scale extragalactic jets is likely to be due to inverse Compton scattering of relativistic particles off seed photons of both the cosmic microwave background field and the blazar nucleus. The first process dominates the observed high energy emission of large scale jets if the plasma is moving at highly relativistic speeds and if the jet is aligned with the line of sigh...
